Are you planning to convert your freshwater tanks into the saltwater tanks?

Do you face a dilemma every time you plan to do so? And, you just let the thought go considering it as a difficult task!

You are at the right place as here we are providing an easy guide to convert the freshwater tanks into saltwater ones. We commonly have a misconception that it is a troublesome process that includes a high cost and a variety of equipment. It is high time to come out of these types of stereotyped thoughts. Here, an interesting thing is that you are already having most of the equipment which is required to transform the freshwater tank into a saltwater one. Let’s have a quick look at the steps of converting the freshwater aquarium into a saltwater one.

Freeing the aquarium

A misconception regarding the material of this aquarium is already there. But, it really does not matter whether you are having the glass or acrylic tank, because both will do well during the conversion of your tank. What matters here is the size of your aquarium. It will be better to take an aquarium of 10 gallons or more for conversion. One more thing to take care is the number of fish. If you previously had eight fishes in the freshwater tank, you cannot keep the same number of fishes in the saltwater tank. Remove the fish and drain the aquarium. Then, you will need to take out all the decorations, lights and the base materials and go through proper cleaning.

Preparing a new base

In the next step, you need to get a base of sand and crushed corals. It is not that the gravel that you used in the freshwater tank cannot be used anymore. It can still be used as a filter in saltwater tank. Be sure that in saltwater aquarium, you need to select the calcium-containing materials as the base which will function as water stabilizers.

Filters

The process of filtration in the saltwater tanks needs to be done with utmost importance. It keeps the tank colorful and clean, and this leads to the well-being of your fishes. Here, you can use two single hands-on tank filters. In addition to that, you need to be a bit more careful, and you have to remove the remaining food particles as well. You can use canister filters which will offer you several settings and customization so that you can handle it in different ways.

Pumps

Pumps are given much importance in saltwater tanks to create the waves; however, these are considered as the least important in a freshwater tank. To give the saltwater fishes a better ambience, where they can continue to do their playful activities, these pumps are mandatory.

Lights and heaters

The fluorescent bulbs which you previously used in the freshwater tanks will work well in the saltwater tanks. Along with this, you can add actinic blue bulbs too which gives an elegant look to the aquarium. Besides that, you can upgrade with LED lighting as well to enhance the look of the tank.
Moving on to aquarium heaters, before placing these, make sure these are tested and safe for using in saltwater tanks. Also remember, you can use the same heater you used in freshwater.

Decorations

You need to upgrade the decorations here because you cannot take anything else than the large stones from your freshwater tank. It is recommended not to use the artificial plants in the saltwater tank because it can be dangerous for your fishes. You can use rocks and corals, bubble divers in this tank which will give sea-like ambience in the aquarium.

Live rocks and livestock

Live rocks are the biological filters which can make the environment of the tank comfortable for the fishes. You need to go through daily checking as it is necessary to make sure the biological balance is alright. After the ecosystem is found to be balanced and stabilized (it may take 2 to 3 days), add the fish. You need to learn the basics of taking care of the new member in between. It may appear a challenging task, but eventually, you will learn.

It is recommended for you to take further guidance regarding the maintenance of this tank. You need to keep track that the fishes are having enough comfort and obstacle free movements in the tank. If you ever have any confusion, feel free to consult an expert.
